RESEARCH INSTITUTES

In several countries different institutions are dedicated to research, teaching and dissemination of movement scores. Here we initially highlight three institutions, the International Council of Kinetography Laban/Labanotation (ICKL), Dance Notation Bureau (DNB) and the Conservatoire de Paris. However, there are still several other organizations and institutions known worldwide that are dedicated to dance notation, including in Brazil and Latin America, especially in Mexico. We present some of these institutions so that the researcher can have ease in their access to their research and further explore the vast scope of notations in dance and movement. The ICKL is a worldwide organization, located in Europe, which brings together researchers in Laban Cinematography from all over the world and every two years organizes an international event to discuss research done by various scholars from different countries. The Dance Notation Bureau based in New York, is one of the institutions that focuses on the creation of a large collection in Labanotation and is also dedicated to conducting training courses in Labanotation at various levels, from the elementary level to the training of notators. In turn, the Conservatoire de Paris is as much dedicated to research in Laban Cinematography as well as to Benesh, having training courses in both notations. At the level of Brazil, our Laboratory of Gesture Writing (Laboratório Grafias do Gesto) is the only university organization that focuses on the general study of movement scores, involving research actions, dissemination and, above all, training in Labanotation and Motif Notation. But it is necessary to highlight that there are other Brazilian institutions dedicated to movement notation; we have the important work of the group Baroque Steps (Passos do Barroco) that develops research, presentations and training in Dance and Baroque Notation and the Libras University with the training in SignWriting. Here on this site we do not present all the institutions that develop actions in movement writing, but through those presented here you can have access to many other institutions.
